1. What special training do Drs. Freedman and Castelbaum have?

Both Drs. Freedman and Castelbaum completed fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Subsequently they both passed the written and oral examinations establishing themselves as Board Certified specialists in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. We are amongst only seven hundred and fifty eight physicians in the United States who have this most prestigious certification. Drs. Freedman and Castelbaum are reviewers for the most prestigious fertility journals in the world.

The doctors at Northern Fertility are fully trained specialists who evaluate and treat every aspect of reproduction and infertility. 4. Do you provide in-vitro fertilization services?

We offer a full range of services that encompass all aspects of assisted reproductive technology. Choosing the right infertility practice is the single most important decision for a couple considering In-Vitro Fertilization. The most recent nationwide report of IVF success rates, tabulated through the Centers for Disease Control, has just been released. Northern Fertility continues to be one of the best IVF practices in the Delaware Valley. You owe it to yourself to carefully review our data. Male factor infertility has been treated with the use of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). We have an extremely successful donor oocyte program for women with diminished ovarian reserve (high FSH levels) or menopause. Patients can provide their own donor (usually a family member) or choose from one of our fully screened donors.

6. Can you take care of women with fibroids

We do not just treat patients with infertility. Many women today are choosing to preserve their uterus despite having multiple myoma (fibroids). We frequently perform myomectomies for uterine conservation. Many myomas may be removed through the hysteroscope on an outpatient basis. Larger myomas may require inpatient hospitalization.

8. How do I know if I need to see a fertility specialist?

Infertility has classically been defined a one year of unprotected intercourse without achieving a pregnancy. Couples should consider a quicker evaluation if there is a known sperm problem, or if the wife is in her late thirties. If there is any question on your part as to whether you should be seen, please phone us or send us an e-mail. We would be happy to meet with you for a second opinion, and thoroughly review your old medical records.

9. If my husband has an abnormal semen analysis, should he see you, a urologist or both?

You should man an appointment to see Drs. Freedman and Castelbaum first. We work collaboratively with many urologists who specialize in male evaluation and treatment. We also send many of our male patients for testing of sperm function to determine which couples should proceed directly to in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

10. I have already had a child and now I cannot get pregnant. Is this common?

Couples suffering from secondary infertility constitute a large percentage of our practice. Subtle changes in ovulation, causing diminished fertility, can be easily identified. In many women endometriosis may be playing a role. Surprisingly, some fathers are found to have a very abnormal semen analysis. In general, treatment for these problems is straightforward and successful.

11. I have had several miscarriages. Can you help me?

Miscarriage is a common reproductive problem. In couples with two or three consecutive losses, the prognosis for a successful pregnancy in the future is good. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of both partners to determine the causes of your pregnancy loss. This will include an assessment of your uterine cavity, endocrine profile, chromosome studies, ovulation pattern, cervical cultures as well as immunologic testing.

12. Infertility therapy must be very expensive. How do I know what will be covered?

We participate with most insurance plans in and around the Delaware Valley. Our office staff will work closely with you to find out what your coverage includes and how we can best treat your health issues. Our in vitro fertilization insurance coverage specialist will help determine if a change in your insurance plan during open enrollment periods will result in better IVF coverage.
